SAUDIA takes you to Washington
Washington, designed in the late 18th century, and much of its layout continues to reflect centuries planned mindset. Its skyline continues to be fascinatingly low punctuated only by the Washington Monument at 169 meters, the capital’s highest structure. Although the city is not tall, it holds its own with structures like the Library of Congress, the largest library in the world with over 145 million books in more than 450 languages, as well as being the oldest federal cultural institution - or the free-to-the-public Smithsonian Institution, which is the largest research and museum complex in the world and affectionately known as the “nation’s attic” due to its eclectic holdings.

D.C.’s entire personality is marked by the U.S. federal government. Not only are many of the iconic buildings part of the state but it accounts for around 25% of all jobs. The capital is also the home to international organizations like the World Bank and the IMF. The city’s second largest industry is tourism. The enormous, sharply geometric National Mall acts as a nexus connecting the Lincoln Memorial (the platform for many famous speeches), the United States Capitol (whose dome is the starting point for D.C.’s street maps), and the Washington Memorial (the world’s tallest obelisk), across the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool. Well known as the scene of presidential inaugurations, protests, and music festivals, as well as the backdrop to innumerable movies, the Mall is one of D.C.’s most important landmarks. The White House, where the U.S. president lives and works, is just to the north of the Mall and the Jefferson Memorial just south on the water. If you come in the spring, try to catch the three-week long National Cherry Blossom Festival. The trees about the Jefferson Memorial are reflected by the waters of the Potomac River’s Tidal Basin. D.C. is one of only 13 U.S. cities with all four professional men’s sports (baseball, basketball, American football/soccer, and hockey) so sports fans will never be without a game or a team to root for on their visit to the city.
