Guangzhou, also and historically known as Canton, is one of China’s three biggest cities and a major transportation and commercial hub. Today it has one of the most expensive real estate markets in the country and for three years in a row Forbes called it the best commercial city on the Chinese mainland. This is in keeping with the city’s historical role as a Silk Road destination. One display of the importance of commerce in the metropolis is that its tallest building is the Guangzhou CTF Finance Centre, of the top ten tallest in the world at 530 meters. To get to the top, you’ll be riding on one of the fastest elevators in the world. Commerce continues at the ground level. The Haiyin Fabric Market is a popular destination to purchase local fabrics and tailor-made apparel. All the stores are specialized along fabric type and professional lines.

Guangzhou hosts the annual Canton Fair, one of the longest standing and largest of its kind in the People’s Republic. Twice yearly it floods the city with people on business errands. Its official name is the China Import and Export Fair and it is held on Pazhou Island at the Guangzhou International Convention and Exhibition Center which has the world’s largest exhibition hall. The 123rd Canton Fair generated 30 billion USD in turnover with more than 200,000 overseas buyers and 25,000 exhibitors. But not everything’s work: Chimelong Paradise in Canton is China’s largest amusement park. Guangzhou’s main mosque is Huaisheng, long thought to have been originally built 1,300 years ago, making it one of the oldest in the world. Visitors to the city on the Pearl River are also exhorted to see the Eight Views of Ram City or Eight Sights of Guangzhou, the eight most famous tourist attractions in the city. The list has varied over time; the first dates from the Song Dynasty (940 - 1279) and the latest in 2011 was put together by the public. This list includes the modern Science City, a tech center which promotes IT R&D.
