SAUDIA flies you to Johannesburg
Lovingly known by locals as Jo’burg or Jozi, the city emerged as a gold-rush mining town and is now the biggest metropolis in South Africa. Johannesburg is an up and coming world-class city. It even has the tallest office building in all of Africa, a title it has held uncontested since 1973, the Carlton Centre at 223 meters high and has 50 stories. Picnics are organized on its highest floor, called the “Top of Africa.” Another fun picnic-like meal is served at Neighbourgoods where you buy the food from a dizzying array of merchants on the ground floor and then head upstairs to sit in the sunlight to eat. Market on Main (at the Arts on Main former warehouse complex) Sundays is another happening designer mixed-goods market which also places the emphasis on fine albeit informal dining. The Wits Art Museum has one of the largest collection of African art in the world and the smooth lines of the building will appeal to architecture buffs. The museum is located in Braamfontein, one of Jozi’s hippest neighborhoods. If you’re more of a hands-on kind of museumgoer, the Sci-Bono Discovery Centre in Jo’burg has more than 500 permanent exhibits you can touch, turn, press, feel, and spin to your heart’s content.

Before dashing into Jo’burg’s bright present, one of South Africa’s three capital cities, branch out to visit Soweto, a South African township, living testimony to the city’s past, and former home to national hero Nelson Mandela. The location there turned into the Mandela House Museum. For those interested in South Africa’s, and humankind’s, more distant past, the Cradle of Humankind is a UNESCO paleoanthropological World Heritage Site just 50 k from the city. Johannesburg is a city literally built on mining and it and continues to be central to the endeavor. The mining giant’s headquarters have been in a famously massive block-long building since 1939 and attest to the city’s mining past and present.
